Hierarchical prediction errors during sensory learning (Iglesias et al. 2013, Neuron)

Prediction errors are crucial teaching signals for learning. Here, we show that different prediction errors map onto distinct neurotransmitter systems: the dopaminergic midbrain signals prediction errors about visual stimulus outcomes, while the cholinergic basal forebrain encodes prediction errors about stimulus probabilities.

Researchers at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich identify a new method of unerringly detecting the presence of pathophysiological changes in the brain. The new method was developed in order to gain a mechanistic understanding of schizophrenia and other spectrum disorders, which will lead to more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatments.
